Freshman Family Program Schedule

7:45 a.m.   Program Check-in: MLK, Jr. University Union (Continental breakfast is provided)

7:45 a.m.   Early Bird: Career Success…Beyond the Classroom

Grab your breakfast and learn how creating a Freshman Action Plan can save you time and money on your way to career success!

 7:45 a.m.   Early Bird Session: Honor College Informational Session, (required for honors students)

This session is for Honors-interested, Honors-qualified, and Honors-accepted students!  This session will discuss the benefits and expectations of the University Honors Program and other high-impact learning opportunities available through the Honors College.  Presidential Scholars will also review the benefits and expectations of their program.

8:30 a.m.   Welcome & Academic Orientation

The Debut staff is eager to welcome you to the program and discuss what you can expect from your day on campus.  Students and family members will then learn more about the academic requirements of Eastern, the role of the Academic Advisor, and the advisement and registration process.

9:45 a.m.   When the Training Wheels Come Off

Sending your student off to college is a milestone not only for your student, but also for you.  We will discuss transitional issues faced by every family as students head off for college.

10:45 a.m.   Break

11:00 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Select-A-Session 1

Select from one of the following sessions: 

  • Housing and Dining - Learn about important resources and services offered by University Housing that will help your student become more successful and ease their transition to college.  Since freshmen live in university housing, this is an essential presentation for family members.
  • Campus Tour - A Debut Leader will be providing a walking tour of campus that will feature an academic building, Booth Library, and The Doudna Fine Arts Center.
    • Please note: The tour will not visit any of the residence halls.

11:40 a.m.   The 2 Medical Must Do’s

Health Services will provide an overview of 2 items students must complete.

11:50 a.m.   Lunch and Panther Fair

Panther Fair - This is your chance to have questions answered by our campus offices! The fair will be open until 12:25 p.m. (See details on page 13.)

12:50 p.m.   Break Out For Afternoon Session

1:00 p.m.   University Mission, Expectations, & Goals

As an institution we believe in aiding our students in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve personal success in life.  We will discuss how the University will challenge and support your student and how you can help.

1:30 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.:   Select-A-Session 2

Select from one of the following sessions: 

  • Career Services - Career Services is not just for seniors!  Learn about different ways students can utilize the EIU Career Services office beginning their freshman year.  (Repeats information from early bird session)
  • Health Care at EIU – Health Service and Student Health Insurance- Sick and away from home, learn how EIU is here for students.
  • Get Advice: How Students Thrive at EIU - EIU offers many resources for students addressing academics, wellness, and social integration allowing them to successfully navigate college.  This session will discuss these services and how you, as a family member and main supporter, can assist your student in being successful at EIU.  (Highly recommended for individuals sending a student to college for the first time.)
  • Panther Card Services - Learn how your student’s Panther Card will gain them access to a wide variety of services.

2:05 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.   Select-A-Session 3

Select from one of the following sessions:

  • Financial Aid - This session will discuss the award notification, disbursement process, and the most frequently asked questions.
  • Student Accounts - In this session we will discuss the student billing and payment process. (Supplemental information on pages 9 - 11.)
  • Technology & EIU - Learn the in’s and out’s of campus technology; from purchasing, maintaining, and accessing there are a variety of options.
  • Panther Card Services - Repeat of Session 2

2:40 p.m. to 3:05 p.m.   Select-A-Session 4

  • Student Accounts - Repeat of Session 3
  • True Life: This is College - Don’t believe the media hype.  Come learn strategies for talking with your student about what really happens in college life. (presented by the Office of Student Standards)
  • Get Advice: How Students Thrive at EIU - Repeat of Session 2

3:15 p.m.   What Happens After Debut?

Join the Debut staff to learn about Prowl,  the fall transition program, and what to expect when students return to campus.  We will also address the University alcohol programming, parking, and transportation. This is the last chance to ask questions and receive last minute tips from the Debut staff. 

4:00 p.m.  Reunite with Your Student
