The Student Volunteer Center was started in 1992 by the Newman Catholic Center with the purpose of providing students a way to put their faith into action. Since then, hundreds of students have volunteered through the Student Volunteer Center and have transformed countless lives.

The mission of the Student Volunteer Center is to enhance
volunteer and service learning opportunities by establishing a cooperative
effort between the community and Eastern Illinois
University. The Student Volunteer Center will coordinate services to
address community concerns, thus, fostering a spirit of cooperation between
the University and the community, encouraging a heightened awareness toward
social responsibility, and promoting practical service learning experiences.
The Center's intention is to make volunteer opportunities accessible to
the student population, to strengthen student organizations, improve the
quality of life in the community, and encourage volunteerism as a distinguishing
characteristic among Eastern Illinois University graduates.

SVC Board Minutes

Meet twice a week with grade school children and assist them
with basic Reading, Math, English, and Science. Hours are Monday &
Wednesday, 4-5 PM, or Tuesday & Thursday, 4-5 PM. The program takes
place at the Newman Center, and it runs for eight weeks.
The Student Volunteer Center has changed their monthly project program for this year. Instead of monthly projects, we now have individual groups that meet regularly to schedule activities surrounding a particular agency or type of social service work. Groups will continue to have a Project Director, but the groups will have more responsibility deciding what activities in which to participate. For more information on these groups and their directors, pick up an SVC brochure!
Help those in need in Charleston and Mattoon by hanging and distributing clothes. This groups works with the Depot Clothing Pantry in Charleston and Catholic Charities and Salvation Army in Mattoon.
Work with developmentally disabled adults through Faith and Light group activities at St. Charles Borromeo Church or driving clients to mass on Saturdays. Activities also include Special Olympics’ “Friend for A Day” and Camp New Hope.
Work with various health agencies in Coles County to promote overall health and wellness. Activities include delivering balloons to the sick at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and working with the American Red Cross Blood Drives.
Work with the Newman Catholic Center’s Right to Life Group. Participants are able to receive crisis pregnancy training to deal with women and men (their peers) who are faced with an unplanned pregnancy.
Work once a month with St. Charles Borromeo Church to help distribute and sort food for the needy in Charleston.
Help out the Student Volunteer Center with mail-outs, flyers, and general office tasks. SVC Representatives also help to promote the Student Volunteer Center through tabling and presentations.
Spend one hour a week with an elderly person from one of the three nursing homes in town. Participation also includes group activities with other students and Christmas caroling.
This group’s activities encompass the idea that we need to recognize kindness as an alternative to violence and indifference in our society. Activities include Random Acts of Kindness Week.
