Student Life:

Student Volunteer Center

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

The Student Volunteer Center (SVC) at EIU is the central clearinghouse on campus for all volunteer opportunities, and gives students an opportunity to enhance their education while serving those in need. The SVC runs several programs, one-time volunteer opportunities, and the Alternative Break Program. Information is also available for over 30 local agencies and organizations. Whether you are looking for a one time event or something to do over the course of a year, we have it at the SVC. Hours are Monday - Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Call (217) 348-0230 for more information.

The Student Volunteer Center was started in 1992 by the Newman Catholic Center with the purpose of providing students a way to put their faith into action. Since then, hundreds of students have volunteered through the Student Volunteer Center and have transformed countless lives.

Volunteer Programs:

New Programming for the Student Volunteer Center

The Student Volunteer Center has changed their monthly project program for this year. Instead of monthly projects, we now have individual groups that meet regularly to schedule activities surrounding a particular agency or type of social service work. Groups will continue to have a Project Director, but the groups will have more responsibility deciding what activities in which to participate. For more information on these groups and their directors, pick up an SVC brochure!

Clothing Outreach

Help those in need in Charleston and Mattoon by hanging and distributing clothes. This groups works with the Depot Clothing Pantry in Charleston and Catholic Charities and Salvation Army in Mattoon.

Developmentally Disabled

Work with developmentally disabled adults through Faith and Light group activities at St. Charles Borromeo Church or driving clients to mass on Saturdays. Activities also include Special Olympics’ “Friend for A Day” and Camp New Hope.

Health Helpers

Work with various health agencies in Coles County to promote overall health and wellness. Activities include delivering balloons to the sick at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and working with the American Red Cross Blood Drives.

Compassionate Companions

Work with the Newman Catholic Center’s Right to Life Group. Participants are able to receive crisis pregnancy training to deal with women and men (their peers) who are faced with an unplanned pregnancy.

SHARE Program

Work once a month with St. Charles Borromeo Church to help distribute and sort food for the needy in Charleston.

SVC Representatives

Help out the Student Volunteer Center with mail-outs, flyers, and general office tasks. SVC Representatives also help to promote the Student Volunteer Center through tabling and presentations.

Adopt-A-Grandparent

Spend one hour a week with an elderly person from one of the three nursing homes in town. Participation also includes group activities with other students and Christmas caroling.

Random Acts of Kindness

This group’s activities encompass the idea that we need to recognize kindness as an alternative to violence and indifference in our society. Activities include Random Acts of Kindness Week.
