About Us:
History of Newman
The Newman movement in the United States started at the University of Wisconsin in 1883. It was known as the Melvin Club. Ten years later, Timothy Harrington a student at the University of Pennsylvania, started the first Newman Club.
Newman Centers began to form on secular and non-Catholic campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada. Eastern Illinois State Teachers College saw the formation of the first Newman club in 1940. Fr. Dan Moriarty and Mrs. Dorothee Coleman began what was to become one of the finest Newman Centers in the state of Illinois. Fr. Dan was the first director of Newman and held this position until 1985 when he retired. From its humble beginnings of 13 students, it has grown to include over 4,000 Catholic students on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. In order to meet the growing needs of our Catholic students the Newman community has made a commitment to build a new church and center on the campus of EIU. This Building Campaign will help us to increase our outreach and ministry to the Catholic students at EIU during a critical time in their lives.
