Stipend and Costs
Stipend
The National Endowment for the Humanities provides a $3,300 stipend to help participants pay for living and travel expenses for this four-week seminar.
Costs
The cost of accommodation (including lodging, use of libraries, and internet access) in London will be about $1,000 and will be deducted from your stipend with your approval upon acceptance into the seminar. The lodging we have arranged at Queen Mary College requires advance payment. In order to participate in the seminar, you will need to return a signed form that grants permission to Eastern Illinois University to deduct these expenses from the summer stipend. You will receive a check in June for the balance of your stipend, about $2,300, to help defray a substantial portion of your travel expenses.
You will also be responsible for the cost of one night’s lodging in Canterbury. We will provide a list of B&Bs and other accommodations; you may choose to share a room with a colleague so as to lower the cost. You can expect to pay $75 -$150, depending on your taste and needs.
Your personal travel, including transportation to England, local transportation in London, and any weekend travel, will be your responsibility. Londoners use weekly or monthly Travelcards (easily obtained at Underground stations) to reduce the cost of traveling on the Underground and buses. These cards are currently priced at ₤25.80/week (about $180.00 for the four weeks of our stay). In addition, we expect travel to and from a London airport to cost between $70 and $100.
Applicants should be aware that prices in England are generally higher than in the United States, and that London is one of the world’s most expensive cities, made even more so by a steep devaluation of the dollar. With summer airfares at $1,000 and perhaps a good deal more, you are likely to spend some of your own money, beyond the stipend, to meet daily costs for food, entertainment, and other expenses. Those who enjoy cooking meals and walking through the city may find costs to be moderate. Those who prefer to eat out and frequent the theatre may find costs to be quite high.
