Housing and Facilities in London and Canterbury
London For the first three weeks the seminar will be located in London, one of the world’s most exciting and yet expensive cities. To provide for affordable housing in a communal university environment, we have arranged for lodging at the Mile End Campus of Queen Mary College, University of London. The Mile End Campus is located in east London about a mile east of St. Paul’s Cathedral, with convenient access to the central city by the Underground Tube.
The price for single en-suite single rooms with communal kitchens will be £410/nineteen nights (~$860), an excellent rate for “modern, attractive, and comfortably furnished” London lodging. Queen Mary College will also provide our meeting space. Library and computer facilities with internet access will be available on campus, and participants can also readily find internet cafes off campus.
Canterbury
The last week of the seminar will be located in Canterbury, a small and ancient city in the southeast of Kent, not far from Dover and the English Channel. We have arranged for comfortable, reasonably priced lodging at Canterbury Christ Church University, located near Canterbury Cathedral in the heart of the city. Living in the shadow of one of the world’s great cathedrals will be a highlight of our stay in Canterbury.
The accommodations we have arranged are in Lanfranc House, a self-catering house with en suite single rooms with communal kitchens, priced at £131.50/week (~$275). Canterbury Christ Church University will also provide our meeting space. Library and computer facilities with internet access will be available to participants.
Alternative Lodging
If space is available, a few participants may be able to arrange for a two-bed room at an additional cost, but given that most rooms are booked far in advance we cannot guarantee that this will be possible, and indeed expect that it will not be. We therefore encourage participants to plan to come without family members.
