Online Music Theory Preparatory Course

Once students have been accepted as music majors by the Music Department and have committed to attending EIU, they will be sent a CD-ROM of materials designed to prepare them for the Music Theory Placement Exam administered on the first day of classes. Students who pass the placement examination will enroll in Music Theory I; those who fail the examination will register for MUS 0541 and, after successful completion of the course and examination, will then enroll in Music Theory I.

The CD-ROM contains eight, self-paced modules, each comprising tutorials, drill and practice, and a final quiz. Quizzes and quiz results are exchanged with the course instructor via email. Students can choose to work within specific modules to improve their knowledge and skills in a particular area. Target scores and/or target times are given for each quiz so that students will know when they have achieved an appropriate skill level (considering both speed and accuracy) in a module. Students can also go back to any completed module for additional practice or to work through a tutorial at any time.

Outline of the Course:
Module 1 - Pitch, Staff Notation, and the Keyboard
Module 2 - Major Scales and Key Signatures
Module 3 - Minor Scales and Key Signatures
Module 4 - Intervals
Module 5 - Triads
Module 6 - Seventh Chords
Module 7 - Rhythm and Meter
Module 8 - Musical Terms
