2nd Annual MiddleSchool Honor Band The EIU Department of Music is proud to Band Announce the 2nd Annual Middle School HonorFestival/Directors Symposium that will be held on Saturday, January 19th, 2008 on the EIU Campus!All middle school students are invited to spend a day rehearsing and performing with our guecomposer/conductor Timothy Loest and our very special guest Michael Sweeney. In addition, directors are invited to a series of special sessions presented by Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Loest, as well as a directors chat moderated by Dr. Milton Allen, EIU Director of Bands. Students will be divided into a 7th Grade Band and an 8th Grade. Getting Around at EIUDrop-off and Parking Directions Middle School band Schedule Michael Sweeney Michael Sweeney (b. 1952) is a graduate of Indiana University where he studied music education and composition. Mr. Sweeney taught five years in the public schools of Ohio and Indiana, where his teaching experience included working with successful concert, jazz and marching programs at all levels from elementary to high school.
Since 1982, he has worked full time for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is currently Director of Band Publications. In addition, he contributes as a composer and arranger in all instrumental areas. Michael is particularly known for his writing at the younger levels for concert band and jazz, and has over 500 publications to his credit. His works appear on numerous state contest lists and his music is regularly performed throughout the world. An ASCAP award-winning composer, his "Ancient Voices" (1994) and "Imperium" (1992) are analyzed in music education texts from GIA Publications. Timothy Loest
Timothy Loest is a nationally known composer, arranger, and music educator. His young band publications possess an accessible, artistic style that flows from twenty years in the classroom.Mr. Loest had his first work published in 1995. Today he is an exclusive writer for The FJH Music Company, Inc. His bestselling supplemental methods Warm-ups and Beyond and Rhythms and Beyond are used daily in band rooms throughout the United States. As a clinician, Mr. Loest delivers engaging and thought-provoking presentations on various aspects of instrumental music. He frequently guest conducts bands in greater Chicagoland and regularly accepts commissions. Mr. Loest received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University and his Master of Music degree from Northwestern University. He holds membership in MENC, ASCAP, Illinois MEA, the Illinois Grade School Music Association, and the Christian Educators Association International. Mr. Loest is currently Director of Bands for the Itasca Public Schools in Itasca, Illinois.
