The Midwest Funk Factory has a very rich and diverse history. This drumline is unique in the fact that it now combines two very distinct styles of rudimental drumming. The ensemble began as a strict Southern Style line with greater emphasis on the groove and visual aspects than on the technical characteristics of today's corps style drumming. To create a unique blend of music, we now incorporate both styles. This group prides itself on providing a solid foundation for the EIU Marching Band and is in constant demand to perform solo engagements throughout the region.
For your audition you will be asked to perform several prepared selections (see links below) as well as sight-reading examples. Every prospective member should select a primary and secondary instrument on which to audition. This way, if things don't work out on one, you will be prepared on another. The audition should be taken very seriously! Practice now and come prepared with all music memorized, as your placement will be based on how you perform at the audition camps. There are no guaranteed spots, even for returning members!
We do not march a "pit" at EIU. If you were planning on being in the pit, don't let this frighten you away, being in the battery isn't so bad, really! Also, those auditioning for a position on the snare line should utilize traditional grip as opposed to matched grip. If you are not familiar with this grip style, please do not be discouraged. There are many traditions and feature moments for every section in the drum line, from snares to cymbals.
The sticks we use are the Innovative Percussion Marching Series models. Lastly, you will need to purchase and bring with you a LARGE 3-ring binder, and (lots of) clear plastic inserts which can be clipped inside. We keep all of our exercises / music in these, and our outdoor practice sessions will be impossible without them.
