Digital Recording Studio

The Digital Recording Studio at Eastern Illinois University provides high-resolution digital recording to students, faculty, guests, and ensembles. The digital recording suite, in conjunction with the Electronic Music Studio, provides students the opportunity to produce acoustic and electronic music deliverable in a variety of formats and media including compact disc, DAT, ADAT, MPEG, and streaming audio.

The studio features standard 24-track 44.1 kHz/16-bit recording, as 48 kHz/24-bit and 96 kHz/24 bit high-resolution recording and mastering. The microphones used for recording sessions and live performances are made by AKG, Shure, and Audio-Technica. A Mackie analog console is used for initial signal capture, while digital capture is performed via Mark of the Unicorn Ad/DA converters and Alesis ADAT. All recording, mixing, signal processing,, and mastering occurs in the digital domain on a Macintosh G4 platform with MOTU Digital Performer software and an Alesis ML-9600 Masterlink mastering recorder. THX-certified JBL monitors are complimented with a Hafler subwoofer for accurate monitoring of stereo and 5.1 surround mixing.

Employment opportunities in the recording facility are available for students to work as recording engineers on department sponsored concerts and recitals.
