History of MTEA at Eastern Illinois University
Based on the premise that minority students need more than just a little encouragement to reach their goals of becoming teachers, Dr. Freddie A. Banks Jr., former member of the Eastern Illinois University (EIU) faculty, and a group of minority students at EIU founded the Minority Teacher Education Association. This organization addresses the problems and concerns minorities face in pursuit of their career goals. We enhance and support minority student teachers in their pursuit of an undergraduate teaching degree, and also help members reduce barriers that minority students entering higher education in teacher education programs face.
