Objectives
The objectives of the Minority Teacher Identification and Enrichment Program are to:
- Increase the pool of minority teachers in Illinois
- Improve minority student retention
- Provide minority students with appropriate role models
- Motivate minority students to apply to and attend institutions of higher education
- Improve transfer articulation among high schools, community colleges, and universities
- Enhance the teaching effectiveness of potential and current minority teachers
- Improve minority students' basic literacy, mathematical, and computing skills
- Provide students with a support network that will assist them with education retention in educational development
Activities Proposed to Accomplish Objectives
- Identify, develop, and assist minority teacher education majors
- Train MTEA members to be mentors and tutors for minority students at the cooperating middle schools and high schools
- MTEA members will be offered information on minority internships, scholarships, graduate education, curriculum planning, financial planning, teacher education program deadlines, and employment preparation and opportunities
- MTIEP Coordinator will continue to initiate cooperative relationships with several school districts and their feeder schools
- Continue to establish and implement MTEA chapters at participating middle schools, high schools, and community colleges
