Welcome
We would like to welcome you to the Minority Teacher Identification and Enrichment Program (MTIEP) web site. MTIEP is a special program designed to recruit and retain minority students who have an interest in becoming teachers. This program has been a vital part of EIUs College of Education & Professional Studies since 1993.
We currently have over 40 MTEA chapters at community colleges, middle schools and high schools throughout the state of Illinois. The chapters are engaged in various activities throughout the year in order to enhance the mastery of teaching skills prerequisites to enter the teaching profession.
If you are a potential student who has an interest in teaching, I hope you will consider becoming a part of this fun and exciting program. If you are a student or staff member at a community college, middle school or high school in Illinois and would like to start an MTEA chapter on your campus, please feel free to contact me for more information.
I am very proud of the rich history of this program and its students and would be happy to share more information with any interested student, staff or faculty member.
Best Wishes,
James Harden, PhD
Coordinator, MTIEP & Education Scholars
History of MTIEP
MTIEP was started as a means to recruit and retain minority students as potential teachers in the State of Illinois. The program works with cooperating community colleges and their feeder schools by establishing local Minority Teacher Education Associations (MTEA) that serve as a resource for activities and information.
Since the inception of MTIEP, approximately 7,000 students have participated in this dynamic program. One hundred and thirty-three students have completed a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Education Degree and are currently employed in Illinois educational institutions.
