M. A. in Mathematics (Mathematics Education):

Elementary/Middle Level Option

The intent of this program is to allow teachers to gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences that will result in your ability to expertly develop curriculum, design courses and lessons, supervise curriculum and instruction, assess mathematics programs, and (of course) learn mathematics.

This program is also an excellent way to achieve professional advancement in your field!

The requirements for the Master of Arts degree in Mathematics (Mathematics Education) - Elementary/Middle Level Option program can be completed in four summers, but many complete it in 3 by taking 1 to 2 courses during the regular academic year. 32 semester hours (30 semester hours if thesis is written) selected and approved by the Mathematics Department from the following:

  • Graduate coursework in mathematics topics for elementary/middle level teachers (MAT 4810, MAT 4920, MAT 5810 and other similar courses)
  • Graduate level elementary/middle level methods (MAT 5400)
  • Mathematics education research course (MAT 5410)
  • Independent Study or Thesis
  • Graduate level education courses

Questions about this degree program should be directed to the Mathematics Education Graduate Coordinator.

The M.A. Mathematics (Mathematics Education) - Elementary/Middle Level Option is a predominantly summer program with summer assistantships and tuition waviers available.
Please contact the Mathematics Education Graduate Coordinator, or the department chairperson for more information.

Requirements to apply to the program include completion of certificate granting program in elementary education and completion of at least 15 semester hours of mathematics beyond genreal education level and methods; and it is reccomended (but not required) that you have two years teaching experience.
