2008 CONFERENCE PANELS

International Medieval Congress, Leeds, UK, July 7-10, 2008

Monday, July 7, 7:30-8:30 pm (Session 403)
'Many a labour, many a greet emprise':
Early Career Options for Graduate Students and Recent PhDs - A Round Table Discussion

Organiser: James P. Wade, Magdalene College, University of Cambridge
Moderator: Jennifer A. T. Smith, Department of English, University of California, Los Angeles

Following the Graduate Student Committee's roundtable discussion at last year's congress on the intricacies of applying and interviewing for academic positions, this session aims to broaden the scope of enquiry by looking at a range of career options available to those entering the current job market. The session will consider the multitude of possibilities within the standard career routes of tenure-track/permanent positions and post-doctoral fellowships, along with other options such as temporary teaching posts, archival and museum work, and other non-traditional academic jobs. Panelists will consist of academics in various fields of employment who can comment specifically on their experiences on the job market.

Participants include Nicolas J. Bell (The British Library, London), Mary Flannery (J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles), and J. Patrick Hornbeck (Fordham University).

VAGANTES

Vagantes, an annual graduate conference affiliated with the MAA Graduate Student Committee, is designed to foster a sense of community among medievalists in the early stages of their careers, provide an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of their scholarship, and showcase the resources of host institutions. Vagantes has held seven successful conferences, at Harvard University (2002), University of Toronto (2003), Cornell University (2004), University of Notre Dame (2005), University of California, Berkeley (2006), Loyola University, Chicago (2007), and The Ohio State University (2008).

Vagantes 2009 is scheduled to take place at The Florida State University. With the exception of keynote addresses, delivered by faculty, Vagantes is a student-run conference. For more information on attending and hosting Vagantes, visit VagantesConference.org
