Minority Mentoring in Mathematics and Sciences

m3s header
The Minority Mentoring in Math and Sciences (M3S) Program was initiated in 2006 by the College of Sciences with the objective of identifying minority math and science students and matching them with experienced and interested faculty mentors.

Thank you for visiting the Minority Mentoring in Mathematics and Sciences program at Eastern Illinois University.

Program events and mentors provide support and resources that enhance the ability of participants to successfully complete degree requirements in the College of Sciences. The M3S program is also expected to build community, encourage student involvement, and promote successful development through academic, social, and personal endeavors.

The program offers:

  • New and exciting things for minorities in Mathematics and Sciences.
  • Mentoring by faculty and others within Eastern Illinois University.

We have accomplished many of the goals that were set in creating this organization.

  • Formation of the M3S College Advisory Committee to facilitate the mentoring plan.
  • Holding several meetings of advisory members and mentors to plan events
  • Compilation of volunteer mentors’ list from COS science departments
  • Inaugural Focus Group meeting on October 4, 2007: 33 faculty/staff and 24 students attended; provided a question-and-answer session with invited participants, followed by a networking/interaction session between students and faculty/staff
  • Panel Discussion on January 29, 2008: 17 faculty/staff and 11 students attended; panelists offered suggestions to minority students for succeeding as science/math majors, shared pitfalls to avoid, and highlighted opportunities available to them
  • Appointment of departmental liaisons to act as “first contacts” for directing math and sciences students to designated mentor
