What Photographs Can Tell Us

"A picture is worth a thousand words"  Common Proverb   Historic photographs can provide a multitude of information about the past.  They can be used to measure change and/or continuity over time in areas such as architectural or geographical history.  Photographs can provide documentary evidence in historic furnishings and technologies.  Also, historic photographs can tell us about the art and technology of photography through time.  In addition, areas which have been previously underrepresented by the written word, such as minority and domestic histories, can be better understood through the study of photographs.  And lastly, when used in conjunction with other sources, such as oral histories, photographs can stimulate and generally add to the depth of one's research.
