Livingston Lord came to Charleston in 1899, and served as the first active president upon the sudden death of the first appointed president. His charismatic presence and strong character made a large impact on the university and its student body.  Every decision he made was in the best interest of the students’ by ensuring they would receive a well-rounded experience while at Eastern.  His leadership while president shaped Eastern Illinois State Teachers’ College into its current position as one of Illinois’ leading universities.
