Department of Leisure Studies

  • Formed in 1973, the Department of Recreation Administration is a relatively small department with five faculty and 120 majors; the faculty have a reputation for friendliness and concern for the student.  In addition, faculty have a solid background of practical experience in the field, providing the basis for combining textbook theory with "real world application.  Their primary emphasis is upon excellence in teaching, although the staff maintain a continued interest in research and community service.  The Department of Recreation Administration has earned a reputation of excellence throughout the state of Illinois and the nation, offering a B.S. in Recreation Administration and an option in Therapeutic

Faculty & Support

  • The curriculum in recreation administration is accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association, one of approximately 90 such programs in the U.S.  The curriculum emphasizes a broad exposure to the social sciences, humanities, and the natural sciences.  This provides the student with the knowledge and technical skills necessary to begin a career in recreation at the management /supervisory level.
  • Professional courses are designed to develop proficiency in activity skills, administrative responsibilities, and leadership.  The curriculum has been designed as a general course of study based on the concept that graduates will be able to qualify for positions with a wide variety of recreation agencies.  The success of our graduates in the field gives solid support to this philosophy.

Therapeutic Recreation

  • The Therapeutic Recreation Option is a unique are involving different skills and qualifications and is accredited by NRPA /AALR, placing it among the leading programs in the country.
  • Graduates will qualify for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, which is necessary for advancement in the field.  The courses in this area encompass a wide variety of disciplines such as psychology, sociology, special education, and health.  In addition, the student is required to complete a six-semester-hour internship, which involves a full-time work experience at a clinical, residential, or community-based TR program under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
