Donor Profile - Jeff and Lila Scott
"Giving back to Eastern allows us to engage with our past -- a very enjoyable past. Our lives developed together at EIU and we are grateful for what Eastern has given us."
-- Lila Scott
Jeff & Lila Scott grew up in Salem, Illinois, as high school sweethearts and attended Eastern Illinois University in the late 1960s. Both were active in the Greek social system, with Jeff as social chairman of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Lila as a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.
Jeff recently retired from Sagemark Consulting, formerly CIGNA Financial Advisors, as Regional Vice President. He joined the company in 1971 as a sales representative and held various other positions until his retirement. Jeff is the author of 21st Century Wealth, a personal financial management book. Lila, who recently retired from her position as a licensed clinical social worker, served as a therapist assisting those with mental health and emotional health problems. The Scotts live in the Richmond Hill, GA, area and continue to be very involved with EIU. Jeff recently joined the EIU Foundation Board of Directors.
Jeff and Lila began their financial support of EIU through Telefund gifts. Later, they began making major gifts to various capital campaigns, including the "Bertrand P. Holley Distinguished Professorship" campaign; the "Taking Care of Business" campaign, which benefited the School of Business; various Presidential Portrait campaigns; and most recently the "Theodore W. Ivarie Leadership and Innovation Fund" campaign. The Scotts have also made a gift of art to the Tarble Art Center.
"Giving back to Eastern allows us to engage with our past -- a very enjoyable past," Lila says. "Our lives developed together at EIU and we are grateful for what Eastern has given us," she added. "We give to EIU because it is the right thing to do," says Jeff. "And the scriptures tell us that to whom much is given, much is required. I think that sums it up for us."
Volunteerism and charitable giving are an important part of the Scotts' life. They serve their community in a variety of ways and continue to support Eastern Illinois University. Jeff and Lila have also included Eastern in their estate plan through the creation of a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT), which irrevocably gifts property to the trust. The Scotts receive income generated by the trust during their lifetime and the remainder of the trust will benefit activities within the EIU School of Business upon their passing. With this deferred gift arrangement, the Scotts' legacy at Eastern Illinois University will continue for years to come.
Jeff & Lila agree that the best part of giving is knowing that they are making a difference in the lives of others. Their gifts will insure that many lives are touched for years to come.
