Study Abroad
The Department of Foreign Languages strongly urges all of its majors and minors as well as the rest of the university community to consider studying abroad during their years at EIU. Opportunities abound for such study no matter what level of language proficiency you currently possess. The point at which you should give studying abroad serious consideration varies with the individual and should be decided in consultation with your academic advisor.
Study abroad comes in many forms through EIU including short term travel/study trips organized through the collaboration of individual departments, International Programs and Adult and Continuing Education. EIU also has exchange agreements with a wide variety of institutions around the world and belong to a number of consortia that provide study abroad opportunities. For further information, click here!
Under the direct supervision of the Department of Foreign Languages, study abroad takes essentially two forms both of which are listed in the catalog as courses:
1) FLS 2500 Hispanic American Culture Through Study-Travel. This course most often takes the form of a 10-day travel-study trip to Mexico during Spring Recess.
2) FLF, FLG or FLS 4275 Internship. These courses require placing students in French, German or Spanish-speaking work situations for 2 to 8 weeks depending on the environment and the number of credit hours sought by the student.
