The graduate program in Kinesiology and Sports Studies provides advanced course work and training in the areas of exercise science, sport administration and physical education. It is a 32 semester hour program with a thesis option. Most students complete the degree in one calendar year but the program in sports administration and physical education is designed to accommodate part-time. Completion of the degree requires successful completion of a capstone experience which involves a written and oral examination under the direction of three graduate faculty.
The course of study in exercise science prepares students for employment in clinical settings (e.g. cardiac rehabilitation), corporate fitness, YMCA, YWCA, and the commercial fitness industry. The program aids students in the preparation for American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and other professional certifications. Graduate assistantships in the Adult Fitness program are available for exercise science graduate student however they may also want to contact the EIU Student Recreation Center about other graduate assistantships.
The program in sports administration is designed to prepare students for leadership and supervisory positions within school, recreation, and commercial sport programs. Unfortunately the department of KSS does not offer graduate assistantships in sport administration. Individuals should contact the EIU Athletic department and student recreation center about possible graduate assistantships.
Physical education students examine, analyze and apply content related to curriculum development, teaching methods, program administration, and behavior management in the school setting. Graduate assistantship teaching physical education in the local K-6 schools are available for physical education graduate students
