Exercise Science

The goals of the Kinesiology and Sports Studies graduate program in Exercise Science are to promote fitness and well-being within the University and local community, and to train and prepare students to become qualified exercise and fitness professionals. The Exercise Science concentration contains two options: 1) clinical and 2) fitness. The clinical option prepares students for careers in scientifically based exercise programs with an emphasis on cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness. Through the designed course work, students develop a scientific understanding and obtain hands-on experience. Completion of this program helps prepare students for certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and other related organizations. The fitness option prepares students for careers in personal training and conditioning. Courses prepare students for certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Both options focus on scholarship through critical evaluation of related research and a knowledge of professional standards.

This program provides meaningful hands-on experience, as students spend a significant amount of time working with staff and participants in two ongoing year-round community adult exercise initiatives: the EIU Adult Fitness Program and the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Assistantships are available within the KSS Department Adult Fitness Program, the EIU Student Recreation Center, and local cardiac rehabilitation programs.
