Windows NT 4.0 network card setup guide

If you just installed a network card in a laptop and the network card shows up in the network control panel, you can skip to the "TCP/IP Setup and Configuration" part of this guide.

Connect to the wall jack

Once you’ve installed the Ethernet card, you’re ready to plug the card into the Ethernet jack in the wall. The instructions below apply to most wall jack connections.

  1. Push one end of the CAT6 Ethernet cable into your computer’s Ethernet port until it clicks. You can purchase the proper cable at any Residence Hall's front desks.
  2. Locate the Ethernet jack next to the phone jack on the wall and insert the other end of the CAT6 Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack. The Ethernet jack is wider than the phone jack. It is colored orange and has an icon of a computer to the left of the plug-in port.

Identify the Ethernet Card

The next step is to make sure that the operating system recognizes the newly installed Ethernet card or network adapter and identifies it properly. Windows NT doesn’t automatically detect hardware so you’ll need to add the card manually. Follow the following steps to have Windows NT recognize and use your network card.

1. Double-click My Computer.
My Computer iconIf you have given a new name to this icon, click that name.
My Computer window2. Double-click Control Panel.
Control Panel window3. Double-click Network.
NetworkThe window will show the installed networking components, click the Adapters tab.
Select Network AdapterClick on Add under the Adapter tab and find your type of network card. If your card is shown in the window, click on the name then click on OK. If your card came with a driver on disk or CD, click the Have Disk button and follow instructions on the screen.

4. After installing the drivers for the network card your card should show up in the Adapters window. If it is you can skip ahead to the TCP/IP setup section of this guide. If you followed instructions and your adapter is not shown or isn’t working, you’ll need to contact the Help Desk at 581-HELP for further assistance.

Now go to the TCP/IP Setup and configuration for Win NT part of this manual to configure NT to use TCP/IP.

TCP/IP Setup and configuration for Win NT

The next step in connecting your computer to EIU’s network is to install the TCP\IP protocol and configure it.
The TCP\IP protocol is used by the computer to send and receive data such as e-mail and web pages as well as connect to FTP sites.

Network - ProtocolsAfter installing the network card select the Protocols tab.

Click on TCP/IP Protocol and then click on Properties.

TCP/IP Properties - IP addressSelect the Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server option.

TCP/IP Properties - DNSClick on the DNS tab. Type your last name followed by your last four digits of your phone number i.e.: smith5555.

TCP/IP Properties - WINS addressClick on the WINS address tab and deselect Enable LMHOSTS Lookup and select Enable DNS for Windows Resolution.

Click OK. This will close the current window and takes you back to the main network window. Click on the Bindings tab so the protocols will bind to the network card, then close the Network window. Restart the computer if told to do so.

To test your new network connection try opening your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and connect to any site. If you cannot connect and you can’t find anything wrong (did you plug the cable into the Ethernet jack ) Contact the Help Desk at 581-HELP for troubleshooting help.
