NT network card setup guide Installing the network card in a desktop computer
with Windows 95/98 or Windows NT The following instructions apply to installing a network card in most
PCs with Win 95/98 or NT4.0. Refer to the manual that accompanied your
PC for detailed instructions on installing boards in your PC. WARNING: Personal
computers operate with high voltages that can be lethal! In PCs, high-voltage
parts normally are marked. You must avoid contact with these. Before you
remove the cover of your PC to install your network card, you must observe
the following steps to protect yourself and prevent damage to the system's
components. To properly ground yourself and reduce the chance of static damage to
the network card, use a anti-static wrist strap and connect it to the
metal chassis of your computer after unplugging it. Tools needed: Phillips and slotted screwdrivers and an anti-static wrist
strap. These can be purchased at a store such as Radio Shack. Read all
instructions first. If you do not feel comfortable performing these actions,
seek a professional to install your network card for you.
Turn
off the PC and unplug the unit from its power source. If needed,
disconnect other cables such as printer, mouse, keyboard and phone
line to create easy access to open the computer. You may want
to make a simple sketch of where the cables went so reconnecting
them will be easier.
- Remove any jewelry from your hands, wrists or neck to prevent
accidental contact with the computer.
- Make sure to use only insulated or non-conducting tools.
- Remove the network card from its container.
- Check the network card for any visible signs of damage.
