How do I change my password on UNIX?

Logging In to the (UX1) UNIX System:

Win95/98/ME/NT/2000 Users:

1. Click the Start button and choose Run.
2. Type telnet ux1.eiu.edu and then press OK.

Mac Users:

1. Click on the Apple and choose NCSA Telnet.
2. Click on File, then on Open Connection.
3. Type ux1.eiu.edu in the Host/Session Name field.

You should now have a login: prompt.

1. Enter your login name (e.g., cfxyz) and press <enter>.
2. This action should bring up a Password: prompt. Enter your password and press <enter>.

Changing Your Password

At the eiu% prompt, type: passwd and then press <enter>.

1. Enter your user ID password at the prompt and then press <enter>
2. Enter your new password at the prompt and then press <enter>
3. Re-enter your new password at the prompt and then press <enter>

A valid password is case sensititve and has six to eight characters, at least one letter (A-Z, a-z), and one number. Once you have successfully typed a valid new password twice, your password is changed for your next login.  For more ideas on a password reference the Password link above.

Logging Out of the System

It is important to logout after finishing your session. At the eiu% prompt, type logout and press <enter>.
