My machine won't accept my password change on Windows 95/98/NT.
- You will need to make sure you have applied all the patches and updates to your machine. If you are
not sure how to do this, please reference the question below.
- If you are running a Windows 95/98 operating system, you will need to download an executable from this site. This will apply
a patch for Active Directory Clients. (executable program)
- If you are running a Windows NT 4.0 operating system, you will need to download a patch from the Microsoft website at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/evaluation/news/bulletins/adextension.asp.
Click on the download on the right under Related Links. This will add a patch for Active Directory Client to your machine.
- If you are running Windows NT 4.0 operating system, you will also need to make some system changes. You will find those on the linked site.
- After all patches are applied to your machine, you can attempt to change your password again.
How do I configure my machine to automatically check
Microsoft's site for critical updates?
For all operating systems other than Windows NT 4.0...
To configure the Automatic Updates feature:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Automatic Updates tab, then click Notify
me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing
them on my computer.
When you configure this setting, Automatic Updates will check the Windows
Update site periodically for critical updates while the computer is connected
to the Internet but the connection to the Internet is not being used.
After Automatic Updates has compiled a list of available updates, the
list will be displayed in Internet Explorer. Click any updates that you
want to download. Automatic Updates downloads only the updates that you
selected. When the download is complete, you are prompted to install the
updates. Some updates require that you restart the computer after you
install these updates.
Note: If you do not select updates from the list, these
updates are not displayed in any lists that Automatic Updates generates
in the future. To unhide these updates, click Restore Hidden Items
on the Automatic Updates tab to view these items.
Manually update Critical Patches from any operating system.
Windows NT 4.0 does not have the ability to automate the update
of critical patches. To manually update your patches from any
operating system, please follow the steps below:
- Click on the Internet Explorer Web browser icon.
- Click on Tools from the tool bar.
- Click on Windows Update from the drop down menu.
- Click on Product Updates from the web page and wait
for your computer to see what updates it needs.
- If there are any updates your PC needs, you will see a dark blue bar
labeled "Critical Updates and Service Packs" with a check
mark on a box to the side of the update.
- Click on the large blue button labeled "Download".
- Click "Start Download".
- The license agreement will be displayed. Click on "Yes"
to accept it.
- There may be other critical or security updates that need to be installed
after the initial install of critical updates. If so, click on the empty
box to the left of the remaining updates. Repeat steps 6 through 8.
- You are not required to install "Picks of the month" or
"Recommended Updates", but you can do so if you wish by following
the instructions.
- When all updates are downloaded, click yes or OK to reboot the machine.
Updates will not take effect until you reboot the machine.
