Express Installation - ITS Installation Tasks

ITS personnel will perform the following tasks as part of the Express Install.
Note that some of these items apply only to Intel/Windows machines and some only to Apple machines.

  • Unbox components.
  • Inventory and inspect components.
  • Record information on PC configuration form.
  • Collect and mark documentation and software disks with the assigned EIU tag number and give to user for filing.
  • Attach EIU Inventory Tag to the computer’s chassis and write the tag number on the major components. If the inventory tag is not available, write the tag number on the front of the computer where the tag will be located.
  • Assemble items to be installed at the designated location. Only those items reflected on the packing slip will be installed at this time.
  • Power on unit.
  • Configure CMOS on Intel machines.
  • Install supervisor/administrator password.
  • Change all power fail options to “stay-off”
  • Verify CPU, memory and hard drive capacity with packing slip.
  • Ask user to make two copies of the PC Configuration form.
    • Attach the original to the installation order,
    • tape one copy inside the computer and place one copy in the documentation bag.
  • Configure network:
    • Install and configure TCP/IP.
    • Install NetBeui.
    • Remove IPX/SPX protocol and client.
    • Leave all other defaults.
  • Configure user name, log-ons, domains and computer name.
  • Reboot system to initialize network configuration.
  • Test unit for network connectivity.
    • Double-click Network Neighborhood and verify whether your server is visible.
    • Open each browser and connect to eiu.edu and an off-campus location.
  • Configure power management in control panel to:
    • Power Schemes = always on.
    • System Stand-By = never.
    • Turn Off Monitor = never.
    • Turn Off Hard Drive = never.
  • Install Norton AntiVirus.
  • Install Netscape Web browser.
  • Install the latest free version of Eudora.
  • Install and test EIU mainframe access software.
  • Put mainframe access software documentation on desktop.
  • Configure one printer for the user if necessary (local or network).
  • Power-down and restart to validate system stability before file system conversion.
  • Convert file system to NTFS.
  • Power-down system and restart to activate file system conversion.
  • Provide user with printed log-on and password change instructions.
  • Instruct user how to log-on and change password.
