Pine is an Internet news and e-mail program that is quick, convenient, and
simple to use. Unlike POP mailers such as Eudora that have a pretty, graphical
user interface (GUI), pine is a text-based program. You can use the pine program
anywhere on campus to read your e-mail because pine allows you to keep your mail in one
central place. All you have to do is login to the PEN system and use pine to read
and send your e-mail. Login to the PEN system using your login and password. Once you are
logged in type pine at the pen%
prompt and press <enter>. This will start the pine
e-mail program.
Figure 1 There many other options available to you in pine. A good place to
learn more is to press the ? key for Help at the Main Menu.
To read your mail press the letter I (or use the arrow
keys to highlight the FOLDER INDEX and press <enter>).
Figure 2 This brings up your INBOX folder with your e-mail messages. You can
do many different operations at this menu. For example, you could use the up and
down arrow keys to highlight the message you want to read and then press the letter V
to view the message.
Figure 3 Here is what an example of an e-mail message that was opened for viewing.
Again, you have many options to select from at the bottom menu.
Figure 4 You could press the letter R to create a Reply
message or, as shown below, you could press the letter D to
mark the message for deletion when you quit the pine program. Student accounts have
maximum quota of 5 Mb (megabyte) of space to store your
messages, so periodically you will have to delete some of your old messages to be able to
receive new messages.
Figure 5 You could also send someone a new e-mail message by pressing the letter C to Compose
(press the letter O for
OTHER CMDS to actually see this option). Fill in the To: field with the e-mail
address of the person you want to send your message to and press <enter>.
Continue to press <enter> to highlight the subject
field and then type something in the Subject: field followed by <enter>.
Now you can type in your message.
Figure 6 To send the e-mail hold the Ctrl(control)
key down, press the letter X, and then release both keys.
The menu at the bottom of the screen gives you various options.
The ^ symbol represents the control key, so ^C is really
the control-C combination, or cancel. When you press ^X (hold
the Ctrl key and press the letter X)
pine will ask you if you want to send the message. Press the letter
Y for Yes and the message will be sent. That's it!
Figure 7 To exit the program press the letter Q to
Quit. Press the letter Y for Yes to confirm that you
want to quit.
Figure 8 If you had previously selected messages to delete you will then be asked
to confirm the deletions. Press the letter Y for Yes to
confirm the Expunge.
Figure 9 Remember to type logout at the pen% prompt when you are finished
with the pine program.
