What you need to get started
- Your user ID with Eastern Illinois University (e.g., cuxyz, cgxyz,
cfxyz or csxyz).
- Your password, which is managed by P-Synch.
- A personal computer, modem and phone line.
- Mac OS 9.1 software.
Background
Macintosh PPP software (also referred to
as OT PPP or Remote Access on Mac OS 8.5 and above) is the software that
allows your Macintosh to connect to the EIU server using the Point-to-Point
Protocol. PPP software is found on all Mac operating systems (Mac OS). PPP software utilizes the Open Transport
technology from Apple. There are three components to this package. First
is the Modem control panel. This allows you
to choose your modem from a pre-configured list. Second is the PPP
control panel. This is where you will control your connections.
The last part of the PPP package is TCP/IP
(on Mac 7.5.3 and above) or MacTCP (on most
earlier versions of MacOS). All three of these components must be in your control panels in order
to be used. If any component is missing from your system, you can reload
it from the OS disc with a Custom Install.
You may use FreePPP, which can
be downloaded at http://www.rockstar.com/
instead. Step I: Modem Control Panel Under the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Modem so that you see
this window.
Connect via:
If you have an internal modem, select Modem Port or Internal
Modem Port (if available). For external modems, make sure that
your modem cable is attached to the port which has a picture of a telephone
receiver. For laptops with a PCMCIA card slot, choose Card Slot.
Modem:
Choose your modem from the list provided. If your modem is not listed,
check the software that came with the modem when you purchased it. Look
for .ccl or .ara files. If you find
them, open your Macintosh HD (hard drive), then the System
Folder, Extensions folder, and Modem Scripts,
and copy them into there. The next time you open your Modem control panel,
your modem should be listed. If you don't find .ccl files, you will not
be able to use OT/PPP and instead can use FreePPP. Sound:
This will control the modem's speaker. While modem noise can be loud,
it is often a good first indicator that there is a connection problem.
Dialing:
Select your type of phone line. If, when you press a button on your phone
you hear a beep, select Tone. If you hear a series of clicks when you
press a button, select Pulse. "Ignore dial tone" is only necessary
if your computer is unable to hear the phone line's dial tone. Step II: PPP Control Panel Under the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then PPP or
Remote Access.
Connection method should be set to Registered
User. Name:
Enter your e-mail user ID (e.g., cuxyz). Password:
Enter your password. It is case sensitive, so make sure your caps lock
key is not activated. Save Password:
Click in this box if you would like the PPP software to remember your
password instead of entering it every time you connect. Number:
Enter the EIU dial-up telephone number, 581-7301. Status:
The progress of the connection will be displayed along with potential
error messages. To make a connection, press Connect. Be
sure you have fully configured your computer (including TCP/IP) before
attempting this. Step III: TCP/IP The TCP/IP control panel is standard on all Macintosh operating system
(MacOS) versions 7.5.3 and above. TCP/IP must be configured with the correct
information before you can dial-up and connect successfully. If TCP/IP
isn't in your control panels, please reinstall it from your MacOS disc
with a Custom Install. Unfortunately, since
TCP/IP is Macintosh software, we cannot provide you with it. First, under the Apple menu, select Control
Panels, then TCP/IP. Settings for PPP (Remote
