The Leading Edge
What is The Leading Edge?

Welcome | What is The Leading Edge? | Certificate | Schedule | Graduates

The Leading Edge is a leadership and supervisory development certificate program designed by the Human Resources Department for Eastern Illinois University supervisors. We can not expect our supervisors to gain needed information either through osmosis or through trial and error. Our supervisors must be able to make effective, informed decisions in order to efficiently support University, Department, and Unit goals. Input from many University Departments has been included to make The Leading Edge work for you.

The Leading Edge is designed to provide new or established supervisors with many of the tools they need to become successful supervisors and managers for EIU. The transition from employee to supervisor can often be challenging and difficult. Effective (quality) supervision is a dynamic process requiring a solid foundation of skills and knowledge.

The Leading Edge is designed to provide the new supervisor with the knowledge which must be used, along with existing skills. The information provided in this program must be used as it applies to each situation, and is intended to ease the stress normally associated with becoming a new supervisor.

The Leading Edge is only one component of the process necessary to improve the effectiveness of the University's leadership team. Large scale change and continued improvement does not happen over night, but through deliberate, applied, and reinforced steps.

The Leading Edge provides the foundation for a common language and a set of leadership competencies. Department leadership must reinforce the principles outlined in this program. In addition, each Department or Unit may need to supplement this training program with more specific information relevant to their area. Any Department that needs to develop additional training, can request assistance from the Training Coordinator in Human Resources at 581-6402.

The Leading Edge is designed to be presented through a series of four-hour modules conducted over a period of up to one year. Modules conducted one month may reinforce modules conducted earlier or support modules yet to be conducted. The modular design is intended to meet the flexible scheduling needs of University managers. Many of the lessons will be facilitated by 'guest speakers' representing their areas of expertise.

The Leading Edge includes a mixture of classroom instruction and assignments designed to be completed between modules. The learning methods are designed to allow for real time skill practice as well as on-the-job application. It is key to the success of this program, that supervisors are encouraged by their supervisors to exercise the concepts introduced in The Leading Edge.
