Employment Opportunities, Civil Service Process, and Career Advancement

Welcome to the Employment/Examinations Unit of Human Resources at EIU. Our goal is to provide the best candidates for Civil Service appointments to our EIU hiring departments.

We are responsible for accepting applications and administering Civil Service Examinations to those who are qualified. We also provide the departments with the information they need to fill their Civil Service vacancies. Faculty vacancies are managed by the Provost's office and Administrative and Professional vacancies are managed by the President's Office. All vacancies and hiring information are located on the EIU website at the Employment Opportunities at EIU main page.

We follow the hiring rules established by the Federal and State government, as well as the State Universities Civil Service System (the system)for Illinois. http://www.sucss.state.il.us/, Board of Trustees regulations, and Internal Governing Policies.

  • Complete an application. (Available 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday in the Examinations Office- Old Main 2020)
  • Identify 2-5 job classifications you would like to test for and bring your completed application to the Examinations Office on any Tuesday or Thursday before 4:00pm.
    • Please bring copies of college transcripts and/or veteran's discharge papers if applicable. All classifications that are used at EIU are located at http://www.eiu.edu/~humanres/employment/job_listing.php, or you can look through the books available at our office. At that time you will be scheduled to take the examination. You may also call 217-581-3911 to schedule an examination for which you have already been screened.
  • Once you have passed your examination, you will be placed on an active register according to your score. When a vacancy occurs for which you are a candidate, you will be asked if you want to interview for it. If you are one of the top candidates, we will schedule an interview for you.

To help you prepare for a State University Civil Service exam you may go to http://www.sucss.state.il.us .

It is your responsibility to always keep your application updated with your current employment and personal information, resume, and transcript. If at any time you change your name, address, email, or telephone number, please notify us in writing.

  • How it Works
    • Your scores will remain active until the examination is changed, you ask for your scores to be removed, or you do not reply to our correspondence.
    • When a position becomes available in a classification for which you have tested, you will be notified, either by phone, mail, or email. You must respond within seven days. The top three interested candidates will be contacted by our office to schedule interviews. The hiring department then interviews and chooses one of the candidates to hire. We will notify you of the decision. Receiving an interest inquiry does not guarantee you an interview.
  • Questions
    • If you have any questions or concerns about your visit with the Employment/Examinations Office or if you believe you are qualified for a position- but were denied an examination, you can appeal directly to the Interim Assistant Director of Human Resources by calling 217-581-5399 or by email to eiu_employment@eiu.edu.

We welcome your comments.

It is very important that you complete your application accurately. Please read all instructions and questions carefully.

Additional Resume Tips

    • Research Eastern Illinois University. Know who you want to work for and what we stand for.
    • Practice answering interview questions at home.
      • Tell me about yourself?
      • What are your strengths/weaknesses?
      • Why should I hire you?
    • Have questions ready that you would like to ask at the end of the interview.
    • Make a trial run. Become familiar with the campus and office building where your interview will be held.
    • It is important that you eat a good and healthy breakfast to be fully awake, alert, and energetic.

Additional Interviewing Tips...

Interview Material

Bring all documents in a portfolio to look professional with updated transcripts, license, resume, references, or referral letters. Necessities include a notepad and pen to take important notes, and breath mints before entering the building.

Interview Behavior

Non verbal skills are important. Behave as if your interview starts the moment you arrive in the parking lot and ends when you exit the premises.

    • Be prompt. Be on time, arriving 10 minutes before the scheduled interview.
    • Be polite to everyone.
    • Make eye contact. This shows confidence as well as comfort level under pressure.
    • Smile
    • Use good posture
    • Listen
    • Relax

Things not to bring to an interview

    • Cell phone
    • Cigarettes
    • Gum
    • Soda or coffee

A Civil Service examination is required for each Civil Service classification on campus. The state's University Civil Service system encourages promotion from within the University. If you have passed probation in your current classification and you have passed the exam for a higher class in your promotional line, you are entitled to a promotional score and should request it. A promotional score is placed before all original entry scores on the register for the class.

An original entry score is the type of score an applicant would receive if he/she:

  • Does not work at the University,
  • Has not passed probation,
  • Is testing for a class outside his/her promotional line.

Once you pass probation, you must contact the Examination Office in writing to request your original entry score be changed to a promotional score. Eastern Illinois University offers examinations daily for all positions on campus whether or not there is a vacancy.

If Eastern has a vacancy and there is not an employment register already established to the hiring official's expectations, then we will advertise for the position to add candidates to our register. Advertised positions may be in various newspapers or websites and can be seen on Human Resources website, Civil Service Job Opportunities. Also, you may listen to the announcement on our civil service job line at 581-6917.
