As a resident of university housing, you are a participating member of the student government in your residence hall, if you so choose. Being a member of a hall government brings with it certain privileges including peer recognition, possible future employment and providing content for your resume. Most importantly, it is a great way to have fun and established life long friendships. But it also includes a number of responsibilities. The extent to which community members of residence hall can carry out activities and succeed as a successful organization depends upon your participation and cooperation. Hall government meetings are held each week in your residence hall and all residents are urged to attend and participate. Other opportunities to get involved on campus are:
Residents are participating members of the Hall Government in the residence hall with certain privileges and responsibilities. The extent to which the members of the residence hall can plan and carry out activities and succeed as a successful organization depends upon the cooperation of each member. Residence hall and/or floor government meetings are held periodically as needed, and residents are urged to attend. In this way, residents have an opportunity to have a voice in Hall Government, participate as a leader in group activities, aid in decision making, and learn to work with others who have similar interests.
Residence Hall Association - R.H.A.
The Residence Hall Association is a group of students who meet each Thursday evening to discuss the residents wants and needs in order to make life in the residence halls more enjoyable. Each residence hall and Greek Court is represented in R.H.A. by students selected or elected through their government. It is the responsibility of each R.H.A. member to transmit the happenings of their community which he/she represents. R.H.A. is not a governing body of the residence halls, but a group which brings forth ideas and makes recommendations to University Housing & Dining Services. Another major area that R.H.A. works with is programming. Throughout the year, they put on many programs designed to enhance residence hall life. Some of these programs include the Panther P.A.L.S. (Peer Advisor Liaison Student) program, the Annual Haunted House, Kids' Weekend, Hall Feud, Final Exam Snacks Program, and many others. R.H.A. is a voting member of I.R.H.A. (Illinois Residence Hall Association), G.L.A.C.U.R.H. (Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls), and N.A.C.U.R.H. (National Association of College and University Residence Halls). Each year, R.H.A. members have the opportunity to attend one or more of the above conferences where they share ideas with other students to improve Eastern's residence hall community. The Sean R. McKinney Scholarship is given by R.H.A. to either a Freshman or transfer student each year for his/her contributions to the residence halls and University Housing. National Residence Hall Honorary - N.R.H.H.
N.R.H.H. is an organization that works closely with the Residence Hall Association in making the residence halls a better place to live. As its name implies, N.R.H.H. recognizes those students who live in University Housing who go above and beyond the call of duty to benefit the entire University Housing community. The nominating and screening process for new members goes on during the month of March, culminating in a joint banquet with R.H.A. during the month of April.
N.R.H.H. does many fund-raising projects throughout the school year in order to contribute to the Richard G. Enochs Scholarship. This award is given annually to an individual who has contributed considerably to enhance the quality of the living environment in the residence halls.
