1. What is Departmental Honors?

Departmental Honors is an upper division program designed for junior and senior continuing EIU students, and transfers. Departmental Honors encourages students to pursue areas of personal interest by delving deeply and independently into a topic

2. How are Departmental Honors classes different from their non-Honors counterparts?

Departmental Honors courses vary somewhat from discipline to discipline, but primarily involve course work that advances sequentially through honors seminar, independent study, research, and thesis. Students take advantage of departmental resources to research, explore, investigate, and analyze information on a subject of personal interest and appropriate to the discipline.

3. What are the admission requirements for the Departmental Honors Program?

Students, who meet the following criteria, may be admitted to Departmental Honors:

1. Attain a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale for at least 12 hours of course work at Eastern Illinois University.

2. Permission of the Dean of The Honors College and the Departmental Honors Coordinator.
**** Transfer students who have not completed 12 hours at Eastern Illinois University may obtain probationary admittance with the recommendation of the Departmental Honors Coordinator.

NOTE: Some departments require prerequisite courses to be completed prior to entering the program.

 

4. What are the requirements to complete Departmental Honors?

Programs vary slightly among academic departments according to the discipline, but typically require 12 hours of focused study. A senior thesis or project completed under the supervision of Honors faculty is required for all programs.

5. Do I have to maintain any particular GPA?

Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA to remain in good standing.

6. Are social activities available through Honors?

Departmental Honors students may participate in the Association of Honors Students (AHS). AHS is a registered student organization whose membership is comprised of EIU honors students. The purpose of the organization is to promote leadership, strengthen fellowship, and enhance the University experience of its members through social and philanthropic events.

7. Are there any special scholarships for Honors students?
