You can become an honors student in a few different ways.
No matter which path you choose, we can guarantee
a collegiate experience like none other.
College as a launching pad to the future... just as it should be.
The Eastern Illinois University Honors College was founded as the Honors Programs in 1982 to meet the needs of academically talented students. Here a place is provided to encourage intellectual and social growth. Students interested in small classes, caring faculty, and administrators as well as carefully thought out courses of study should think about joining the programs.
Here much of what you need is provided in one place - honors housing, advising, scholarships, research grants, priority registration, and most importantly a professional and committed staff.
The Honors Office is a place for students to come for advice and help. The staff is dedicated to the interests of our students. Parents are always welcome as are their telephone calls or email messages. All of the help, advice, and counseling are for the purpose of preparing our students academically to a high standard. We ask much of ourselves and lead by example. Our students work to their abilities and follow their interests intellectually. This quest is what we are about; to seek to make available the best academic opportunities to our students and prepare them to do well in business, graduate, and professional schools. In the end however it is up to you to use the resources provided.
University Honors
The University Honors Program offers enriched and rigorous alternatives of General Education courses and a limited number of other courses outside of General Education. Honors classes are small course sections taught in a colloquium style format by professors who are distinguished in their field. Completing courses in the Honors format provides an enhanced educational experience that prepares students to compete at the highest levels for career opportunities and graduate school. Students must take a minimum of 25 hours in Honors primarily during their freshman and sophomore years.
The Departmental Honors Program encourages students to pursue areas of personal interest by delving deeply and independently into a topic. Students take advantage of departmental resources to research, explore, investigate, and analyze information on a subject appropriate to the discipline. Course work advances progressively culminating in a senior thesis. Departmental Honors prepares students for the competitive environment after graduation by promoting focus and independent exploration within a field. The program requires a minimum of 12 hours of credit. A senior thesis written under the supervision of Honors faculty is required.
The Presidential Scholars Program is a scholarship and citizenship experience designed to foster and promote the highest possible standards of academic and personal excellence in students. The program offers 8-semester tuition (15 hours) and fee monetary awards with specialized programming and individualized opportunities for recipients.
Eastern Illinois University and the Honors College are committed to promoting the highest quality research opportunities for students. The Honors College advocates faculty mentoring of student research, believing that such activities enhance the experience of both faculty and students by fostering collegial relationships and supporting teaching-learning experiences. Students gain research experience by working with a veteran faculty investigator who is responsible for supervising the project. Students are co-authors of publications and come away with a heightened awareness of the kind of work required in graduate study and in the professional world.
The Honors College supports students for National Scholarship Programs by sponsoring, mentoring, and nominating students for nationally competitive programming and by referral to faculty scholarship advisors.
