•To require a major writing assignment from all students in an Honors course. We advise the students that all honors courses are writing intensive or writing active.
•To grade Honors students according to the same standards used in regular or non-Honors course equivalents.
•To encourage class discussion and to try varied teaching methods in order to expand from the lecture format. This flexibility is facilitated by the smaller class size of Honors courses. For more information on Honors teaching philosophy and techniques.
Please see “What Is Honors Teaching?”
Honors Faculty are also encouraged to...
• Attend Honors College events such as the Honors Ice Cream Social (held the evening of the first day of classes in August), Honors Day Open House (held the afternoon of the November University Open House, usually on the Veteran's Day holiday), and Honors Awards Day (held in April). Current and prospective students alike enjoy seeing the faculty at these out-of-class events.
• Attend Association of Honors Students functions such as their Picnic in August, their progressive dinners, and any other activities that they may plan for faculty and students.
• Assist students conducting undergraduate research by being a faculty sponsor of an undergraduate research grant applicant. Undergraduate Research Grants are awarded each semester through the Honors College, and include stipends for both student investigator and faculty mentor.
• Volunteer to mentor a Presidential Scholar. For more information on this program, please see Presidential Scholars Program
• Help us to identify prospective candidates for National Scholarships, such as Truman, Fulbright, and Goldwater Fellowships. A successful applicant must begin to prepare earlier in the college career. For more information on Eastern's National Scholarship participation, please see National Scholarships and Fellowships.
