Freshman Scholarships and Awards

Please note: The deadline for the Entering Freshman Award and the Presidential Scholars Award has already passed for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Entering Freshman Award

For the 2012 - 2013 academic year, all entering freshmen to the Honors College at Eastern may be awarded an Entering Freshmen Award (EFA) in the minimum amount of $2,000 if they have a composite ACT score of greater than, or equal to, 26 and a high school cumulative grade point average of 3.5, or greater, on a 4-point scale. This award is made to all qualified entering freshmen in the Honors College and is a one-time award that may be used toward tuition or fees.  If, however, they are offered a scholarship from the Honors College in an amount greater than the $2,000, then the student is ineligibile for the $2,000 EFA.

Entering freshmen may also apply for the Presidential Scholars Award if they meet the criteria for that award. Please keep in mind that the deadline for the applications for these awards are firm.

Presidential Scholars Award

Minimum eligibility criteria for the Presidential Scholars Award (PSA) are:

Composite ACT score of 30 and either a weighted high school GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 90th percentile of the graduating class.

OR

Composite ACT score of 28 and either a weighted high school GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.00 scale) or a ranking in the top 95th percentile of the graduating class.

Applications for the Presidential Scholars Award are evaluated based on official high school transcripts, extracurricular/volunteer activities, personal essay, and recommendations from a high school faculty member or administrator. All applications are reviewed by the Honors Council, a council composed of departmental chairs, faculty teaching for the Honors College, and current Honors College students.

The Presidential Scholars Awards cover all tuition and fees each semester as a full-time student up to 15 semester hours.  For the 2011-2012 academic year that would amount to $10,533.  Current tuition and fees, as well as room and board figures, may be found at under Admissions.  Each freshman honors class will have approximately twenty (20) Presidential Scholars.

Presidential Scholars are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.40, or greater, and to remain in good standing with the school, in order to retain their eligibility for the award.
