13 August 2007: One day after coming to Charleston and meeting each other, the class got into a van and headed to Grand Rapids, Michigan (this is a great way to get to know people--ride in a van with them for five-and-a-half hours!). After touring a number of local museums, an alumni of the HA program hosted the class for a party. |

| Here we are, from left to right: Catherine Carmen, Mr. Riccio, Laurie Stein, Sarah Elm, Alisha Goode, Matt Cassady, Kristen Lundquist (proudly displaying the HA mug she won in a game of table bowling), Angie Drews, Tiffany Taylor, Alyson Mazzone, and Dan Grzesiak. | |
10 September 2007: The Museum Exhibits class visited the library at the University of Illinois. The behind-the-scenes tour included an overview of the book digitization process and the enormous book repository. |
|
14 September 2007: Dr. Reid and the Material Culture class visited the St. Louis Art Museum to see the exhibit: "Symbols of Power; Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800-1815." The students were thrilled when Dr. Reid took them to Cahokia Mounds just outside of St. Louis on the way home. Thankfully no one was hit by lightning. |

22 October 2007: Mr. Riccio and the Museum Exhibits class piled in the van and headed up to Rantoul, Illinois, to visit Taylor Studios, an exhibit design and fabrication firm. Everyone's favorite part was seeing the life-size woolly mammoth that had recently been constructed. Seen behind the group here is the body of the woolly mammoth--imagine how big it would be with its legs attached! Check out the Taylor Studios website by clicking here. |

| 16 January 2008: As part of Dr. Reid's Care and Collections class, the HAs traveled to Springfield, Illinois. This included a trip to the Old State Capital, where the class honed their artifact cataloging skills by filling out description forms and condition reports. The stylish blue gloves help protect the artifacts! | |
| 23 January 2008: The class once again went to Springfield, this time getting a behind-the-scenes look at the Lincoln Home. | |
| 30 January 2008: This week we went to Bement, Illinois to visit the Bryant Cottage State Historical Site. The class conducted inventory on the site's collection. | |
| 20 February 2008: This was our second trip to the Coles County Historical Society in Mattoon, Illinois. The class worked on cataloguing, assessing, and marking items in the collection. | |
| 5 March 2008: The class visited the Spurlock Museum in Champaign, Illinois to discuss collections care and materials. | |
| 5 May 2008: Day one of the end-of-the-year fieldtrip to Ohio! We went to Chrisholm Historic Farmstead, the McGuffey historic house museum, and had dinner at Porkopolis (formerly Rookwood Pottery) in Cincinnati. | |
| 6 May 2008: Day two of the class trip. We visited Union Terminal and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center before heading back to Charleston. |
The HA class takes a number of fieldtrips throughout the course of the semester to expand our knowledge of museums. As much as we love sitting in classrooms, it's always fun to get out and about. You may click on any of the images below to see a larger version of the picture.
