| 24 September 2007: The class goes behind the scenes at the Tarble Arts Center to find out what objects are available for use in the upcoming transportation exhibit (also known as the Corridors exhibit). |

30 September 2007: The design brief exhibit meeting for the Corridors exhibit began at 3:00 pm. Each team completed their part individually, and convened to put it all together. Notice the Cheez-Its--a necessary part of any long meeting. Contrary to how it may appear, Dan is not wearing a Russian hat--there were some flowers over in the window. |
|
30 September 2007 Part Deux : The 14-page design brief rough draft finally materialized at 10:30 p.m.--yes, that is seven-and-a-half hours after the meeting began! The class worked feverishly to produce a coherent document. (You'll notice we went from Cheez-Its to pizzas!) |

| 15 November 2007: Most of the class assembled to begin work on the design schematics for the exhibit. More pizza to be had by all, although we upgraded to Pizza Hut this time. Not quite a seven-and-a-half hour meeting (thankfully!), but more design work still needs to be done after Thanksgiving Break. | |
| 25-26 November 2007: Sometimes things take a lot less time then you think they will...actually, that never happens! It was another multi-day meeting as the class reassembled after Thanksgiving break to finish the design schematics. Festivities began at 7:00 pm Sunday, and finally finished at 2:00 am Monday morning. But, the exhibit now has a design motif and floorplan! | |
10 December 2007 (Part One): It's exam week, which means all sorts of projects are coming due. For us, that meant 13 hours in the lab! We began at 9:00 am with the Corridors exhibit binder. This massive tome charts all of our progress so far. "But," you say, "that can't have taken 13 hours to complete!" So true...now continue on to part two. |
|
| 19 February 2008: Exhibits class resumed on 12 February, but today the class finally reconviened to assess where the current status of the exhibit. | |
| 18 March 2008: The class traveled to EIU's Art Park West for a tour of the exhibit construction area. This shop is where all of the things we need to fabricate will be made. Collective carpentry experience of the class: none! | |
3 April 2008: Exhibit construction officially got underway earlier this week. Here's a few shots from today: affixing masonite to the coach-class railroad car frame, preparing to cut the masonite on the table saw, and painting the temporary walls of the eGallery. |
|
| 5 April 2008: The railroad boxcar was finished yesterday, and as you can see, turned out quite well! Today we painted the economy-class car, as well as some of the temporary walls. | |
| 8 April 2008: We keep plugging along. Alisha is putting molding around the window opening of the luxury railroad car frame; Aly observing Tiffany, Catherine, and Matt putting together the frame of the boxcar crate; Matt cutting the masonite for the sides of the crate; and Dan putting working on the seat of the economy-class car. | |
| 9 April 2008: Still going! Sarah is painting wood grain on the crate; Laurie is finishing the faux-tile floor of the economy-class car, Sarah is sanding the crate to give it a weathered look, and Aly is varnishing the legs of the luxury-class car's table. | |
| 10 April 2008: Making progress! Tiffany is painting the boxcar crate, while Kristen sands one wood support and Aly varnishes another; Dan is varnishing the boards for the backrest of the economy-class car bench; and the finished product. | |
| 11 April 2008: Sarah and Dan met Angie at Tarble to go over framing requirements with Mike. Tarble representative Shane gave a lesson on cutting mats for frames. Sarah and Dan then took turns cutting the mats for our digital images and original photography in the currently empty (not for long!) eGallery. | |
| 12 April 2008: The exhibit opens next Saturday--yikes! Laurie and Alisha are painting dividing walls; Aly, Angie, and Sarah are building the interactive flip-panel stand; Kristen is sanding part of the travel wheel while Catherine and her friend, Kevin, work on the flip panels. | |
| 13 April 2008: It's the last day before exhibit construction week officially begins. Aly is working on the travel wheel while Sarah is painting the train car divider walls and Alisha is painting a shelf; Laurie, Kristen, and Tiffany are preparing wallpaper for the end of the train car interactive. | |
14 April 2008:
|
|
| 15 April 2008: Highlights from day two included assembling the dividing wall in the eGallery and applying the front images to the eGallery door, as well as finishing major assembly on the train car. | |
| 16 April 2008: Today we hung signs in the eGallery, finished the train car, and framed photographs. | |
| 17 April 2008: A very tired HA class assembled at Tarble today to take care of some loose ends, and then begin the process of measuring and hanging artwork. | |
| 18 April 2008: The final day of construction! Duties included hanging object labels, conducting a final walkthrough, and taking a celebratory group photo. | |
| 19 April 2008: Opening reception! |
One of our main projects as HA students at EIU is an exhibit that will be displayed at the Tarble Arts Center here on campus. Because this is such a big project, it will take us two semesters to complete. The exhibit will open in April 2008.
