He came to EIU in 1999, after teaching stints at John Jay College–CUNY, and the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Bronx NY.
His published work has appeared in the Journal of American History, American Nineteenth Century History, Journal of Social History, and Journal of American Studies, among other venues, and his book reviews have appeared in many publications, including most recently the American Historical Review and Reviews in American History. His book, Beyond Party: Cultures of Antipartisanship in Northern Politics before the Civil War, was published in 2002 by The Johns Hopkins University Press.
His current research projects include: Illinois’s War, a documentary history of the Civil War era, under contract with the Ohio University Press; an edited volume of the letters of Private James G. Watson, 25th Illinois Volunteers; and a long-term study of the political and social construction of race in Illinois, 1818-1877.
