This program is designed to reduce alcohol abuse by correcting misperceptions of student alcohol use among students through 60-minute small-group interactive workshops targeting a particular reference group/population. These interventions are led by trained student facilitators or professional staff. This intervention is modeled after Washington State University’s Project Culture Change.
The goals of the Small Group Social Norms Internvetions include:
An increase in accurate perceptions of Eastern student drinking attitudes and behaviors
A decrease in the number of students having 5 or more drinks in one setting
A decrease in the average number of drinks per week consumed by students
A decrease in negative alcohol-related consequences reported as occurring within the last year
Research suggests that this type of program is effective in groups that already exist, and the norms are more relevant to individual members.
