IRB Position Announcement
The following five positions are available on the IRB beginning Fall 2013. Each position will be appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School to serve a three-year term.
1. One regular voting member from the College of Sciences
2. One regular voting member from the College of Business and Applied Sciences
3. One regular voting member from the College of Arts and Humanities
4. One alternate member, from any college or department, whose primary concerns are in a scientific area*
5. One alternate member, from any college or department, whose primary concerns are in a non-scientific area*
* Scientist/Nonscientist - Members whose training, background, and occupation would incline them to view scientific activities from the standpoint of someone within a behavioral or biomedical research discipline should be considered a scientist, while members whose training, background, and occupation would incline them to view research activities from a standpoint ouside of any biomedical or behavioral scientific discipline should be considered a non-scientist.
Individuals interested in serving on the IRB should submit a letter or email to Cheryl Siddens, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, by March 22, 2013, expressing reasons for interest in membership and any experience that would be relevant to the position.
About the IRB
The EIU Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with assuring the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects participating in research. Therefore, the IRB is required to review all research involving human subjects prior to the conducting of any research.
The EIU IRB is currently composed of 9 regular voting members: 2 members from each college and 1 non-affiliated member. There are also 5 alternate members: 4 members from various departments and 1 non-affiliated member. Alternate members are encouraged to attend IRB meetings, but will only contribute to the quorum and be able to vote if they are substituting for a regular member.
The IRB generally meets once a month during the academic year for research protocol review, administrative business, training, or any other issues that need to be addressed by the board. Monthly meeting times are arranged at the beginning of each semester, based on members’ schedules. Summer meeting are scheduled on an as-needed basis.
About IRB Membership
Members are appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School to serve three-year terms on the IRB.
New members of the IRB are required to complete a 1 hour CITI Program on-line training course developed specifically for IRB members. They will also be provided a 1 – 2 hour orientation session conducted by the Compliance Coordinator and the Chair of the IRB.
In addition to attending the monthly meetings, IRB members are expected to individually perform research protocol reviews throughout the year. Each member, including alternate members, can anticipate conducting up to 6 reviews each semester.
