Dr. Jad Smith, assistant professor of British literature, coordinates the graduate program in English. The graduate program offers a master of arts degree in English with four concentrations: literary studies, literary studies with creative writing emphasis, composition and rhetoric, and professional writing. Dr. Smith received his doctorate in literary and cultural studies from Carnegie Mellon University in 2003. His areas of interest include eighteenth-century British literature, and literary and cultural theory.

Admission to the graduate program in English requires an application to the Graduate School (on-line at http://www.applyweb.com/apply/eiu/menu.html) as well as an application to the Department of English.
Please contact Dr. Smith or visit the program's web site for program admission criteria: http://www.eiu.edu/~english/STUDENT/gradover.htm.
First Choice Graduate programs achieving the distinction of "First Choice" have applied and been subjected to rigorous review from EIU's Council on Graduate Studies, with oversight from the Graduate School, to ensure they meet the highest standards of scholarly excellence as evidenced through sustained achievement of criteria developed and adopted by the Council in 2006.
