In order for our students to gain experience working in the "real world" before they graduate, the Department of Geology/Geography has internships programs with various federal, state, and local agencies. Under the direction of Dr. Gutowski, the internship program has been extremely successful.
The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) allocates funds to state colleges and universities in order that their funding might be matched by a sponsoring agency. This past academic year IBHE allocated Eastern Illinois University $90,000 in the form of a Cooperative Work Study Grant that was then distributed among various departments on campus.
Thanks in large measure to Dr. Gutowski's efforts and the strong academic background of our students, the Department of Geology/Geography received the largest allocation. This meant that our internship program was able to 14 different students during the fall, spring, and summer sessions. Students worked in five different sponsoring agencies. Within the Illinois State Geological Survey, students were placed in different divisions. As part of their internships, students receive academic credit and pay, at $8/hour which averaged out to a little over $1300/student this past academic year!
