The University is dedicated to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive work environment for employees and students. Obtaining and maintaining this goal requires the willingness, understanding, and patience of all members of the campus community. The right of non-smokers to protect their health and comfort shall take precedence over another person's right to smoke.
POLICY
Smoking is prohibited in all University facilities, including University vehicles. Smoking is further prohibited in outdoor areas where seating is provided, such as: athletic contests, concerts and other types of entertainment and productions.
EXCEPTIONS TO THE POLICY
Smoking may be permitted in private rooms only on designated floors of selected residence halls. Smoking may be permitted in University-owned private residences.
Smoking may be permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas adjacent to buildings (not in airlocks or entry ways). Smokers are required to dispose of smoking materials in designated receptacles.
DEFINITION OF SMOKING
The burning of any type of lighted pipe, cigar, cigarette, or any other smoking equipment, whether filled with tobacco or any other type of material.
SMOKING RELATED COMPLAINTS
Where there is a violation, the person should be informed of the University policy. Should that person continue to smoke, and if the person is a University employee, the aggrieved party should talk to the person's supervisor. Otherwise, complainants can use the applicable grievance or disciplinary procedure.
COMPLAINTS INVOLVING SMOKING MAY BE FORWARDED AS FOLLOWS:
* Faculty to the appropriate Dean or Vice President
* Administrative/Professional (A&P) staff to the appropriate Dean, Director, or Vice President
* Civil Service staff to the Department of Human Resources
* Non-University persons to the University Police Department
* Students to the Student Judicial Affairs Office
