    Student Employment Authorization forms are available online at http://www.eiu.edu/~finaid/text/stuempforms.htm

    The student employee should be approved for employment prior to the first date of work to avoid delay in pay or possibility of the student being ineligible for employment.
    Complete the online form, print and return to Student Employment, Office of Financial Aid.

    1. Check Department Employment or Revision (usually salary increase).

    2. Complete the student information.

    3. Job Title - e.g. part-time student worker, night assistant, kitchen assistant, etc.

    4. Job Duties - list the duties the student will perform.

    5. Beginning date - first day of employment. SALARIED STUDENT - the beginning date must correspond with the start of a bi-weekly pay period.

    6. Ending Date - An ending date is not required unless student is salaried.
    SALARIED STUDENT -
    the ending date must correspond with the last day of a bi-weekly pay period.


    7. Rate of pay - hourly, lump sum or salaried (the rate of pay should match the job duties).

    8. Complete the department name and ORG number that will be charged.

    9. Student has worked on EIU campus? Check yes or no. If no, attach Federal Form I-9 and copies of the documents used for verification. Send with the authorization.

    10. Supervisor name, E-number, and phone number.

    11. Print Authorization.

    12. Clear Form - information will remain on computer if not cleared.

    13. Student needs to read Conditions of Employment and answer number 7.

    14. Student signature and date signed are required.

    15. Department Account Manager signature and date signed are required.

    16. If Lump Sum or Salaried, send to Human Resources for approval.

    17. Send completed authorization form to Student Employment for verification and
    approval.



    Frequently Asked Questions

    Does a student need a new I-9 when hired?

    A student needs a Federal Form I-9 the first time he/she is hired for a job on campus. The I-9 will remain on file the entire time the student is enrolled at Eastern. A new I-9 is not needed each time the student is hired for a job.

    How many hours may a student work?

    A student may work 42 hours each pay period during the fall and spring semesters. During summer, a student may work 56 hours each pay period. If enrolled, international students are limited to 20 hours per week due to DHS rules. If not enrolled summer, international students may work 56 hours each pay period.

    Does a person have to be enrolled in classes to be eligible for student employment?

    A person must be enrolled in six semester hours to be eligible for student employment, however during summer a student may work without being enrolled as long as he/she completed at least six semester hours the preceding spring semester.

    What is minimum wage?

    At the present time minimum wage is $6.50 per hour.

    How does a student find a job on campus?

    Students may check the job board in the Office of Financial Aid or make direct contact with departments. Job listings can also be found on-line.

    Do all departments post openings with student employment?

    Most departments post positions with our office. However, students need to make direct contact with the departments also.

    What is Federal Work-Study?

    Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a government program. A student must apply for FWS when filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). By indicating that you are interested in student employment, you will be considered for Federal Work-Study. If a student is awarded FWS it will be listed on their Financial Aid Notification letter. FWS guarantees a student employment on campus. A student must be enrolled in a minimum of six semester hours.
