Call for Proposals: The Third Annual Midwest Undergraduate Film Conference at the University of Notre Dame April 24-25, 2009

The Midwest Undergraduate Film Conference offers undergraduate students the opportunity to present papers representing their best work in film and media studies. Students will deliver papers on any aspect of film and media history, criticism, or theory. Papers will be given in twenty minute slots.

Students who wish to participate in the conference must submit a title and abstract describing their paper (maximum 200 words).
Students should also attach a brief (maximum 100 words) biographical statement stating their college or university, their major, their interest in film, and their academic goals. Proposals should include technical needs and contact information. Students must use appropriate submission forms, available online at http://www.nd.edu/~ftt/submission.doc>ftt.nd.edu/submission.doc

A panel comprised of Notre Dame faculty from the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre will select papers from among the proposals received. This is not an undergraduate film festival but an academic conference. Do not send student films. Student films may, of course,
form part of a paper presentation but will not be screened outside the 20-minute time allocation.

Deadline for proposals: February 15th, 2009

Send completed form to Christina Ries via email,
using subject heading "undergraduate conference"

There is no submission fee for this film festival.

This film festival promotes the mission of our Women's Studies Program: to promote an understanding of how issues related to gender, age, race, economic status, sexual identity, and nationality affect women's lives and the communities in which they live. In order to promote an equitable and sensitive environment for all persons, the Council also responds to issues affecting women on campus and in the community.

In addition to our March 25 film festival for new and emerging artists, we will also be viewing three feature films that highlight the Women's History and Awareness Month theme: Women and War. All of our events will be held in the Doudna Lecture Hall, and all events are free and open to the public.

Please see the tentative schedule below:

Tuesday, March 24, 5:00: The Sari Soldiers.

Dir. Julie Bridgham. "Filmed over three years during the most historic and pivotal time in Nepal's modern history, The Sari Soldiers is an extraordinary story of six women's courageous efforts to shape Nepal's future in the midst of an escalating civil war against Maoist insurgents, and the King's crackdown on civil liberties." (90 minutes)

Wednesday, March 25, 2-6: Central Illinois Feminist Film Festival, a Festival of New and Emerging Filmmakers.

Thursday, March 26, 5:00: My Home, Your War.

Dir. Kylie Grey. The film "offers an extraordinary look at the effect of the Iraq War through the eyes of an ordinary Iraqi woman. Shot in Baghdad over three years that span the time before, during, and after the invasion of Iraq, this profoundly moving film brings the perspective that-until now-has rarely been available to U.S. audiences." (52 minutes)

Thursday, March 26, 7:00: Krylya (Wings).

Dir. Larisa Shepitko: A fascinating and human portrayal of a once-famous fighter pilot and loyal Stalinist named Nadezhda Petrovna. Now a 41-year-old provincial schoolmistress, she has so internalized the military ideas of service and obedience that she cannot adjust to life in peacetime.

English 3504 (Murray)
Film and Literature: Spectacle and the Spectacular - Capturing the Eye, Silencing the Message in Film and Literature
7:00-9:30 R

Geoff King argues that the spectacular features of a film do not necessarily erase "the kinds of underlying thematic oppositions and reconciliations associated with a broadly 'structuralist' analysis of narrative" (25). King's argument suggests that by making the workings of spectacle transparent, the underlying issues on display can gain more force. Yet the conflict between the spectacular and the environmental degradation on display is not resolved, even from King's perspective; it is merely revealed. This course will explore the effects of spectacle and the spectacular in selected films and literary texts. (old curriculum Group 6; new curriculum Group 5)
