Supporting Scholarly Publishing - Early Career Faculty Course

Course Information:
This course will meet on Fridays 2:00-3:00pm in the Blair Hall seminar, room 2116. Please note that this course is limited to 10 participants. There are no costs involved for faculty members.

Course Description & Objectives:
Faculty development professionals have long recognized an “ambition gap” among the nation’s professoriate: most faculty report they would like to produce and publish more scholarship and yet 85% of all research published in the United States is produced by just 15% of university professors. For both universities and faculty members, this imbalance carries consequences. Publication records are important factors in both institutional rankings and in retention/promotion decisions. Our faculty at Eastern Illinois University, like at many other universities, can struggle to manage a heavy teaching load while pursuing an active program of writing for scholarly publication.

This course is designed to support early-career faculty in revising and submitting a paper for publication in a scholarly journal. By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Developed and utilized a personalized plan for increasing time devoted to scholarly writing
  • Improved their ability to revise their writing and to respond productively to critique
  • Refined their understanding of writing, submission, review, and publication processes
  • Increased their confidence in their ability to publish their research
  • Submitted an article for publication

Course Prerequisites:

A complete paper. Acceptable papers would include: dissertation chapter or master’s thesis, fully written conference paper, unpublished article (perhaps rejected once, but they want to send it out again), unpublished article with a “revise and resubmit” from an editor, paper based on substantial analysis of credible data.

Registration Information:
To register, please contact the Faculty Development Office at (217) 581-7051 or at facdev@eiu.edu. Please note that registration is also open to those who have previously participated.
