“The Visual Syllabus: What Is This Course Really About?” A Workshop for Faculty by Cheelan Bo-Linn, Wed., 24 October 2018, 12:00—1:30, 1895 Room, MLK, Jr. Student Union

  •  When we design a course, we often juggle fitting in desired content and the required or intended outcomes. The process can result in a course overflowing with content and/or a long list of learning goals that are only somewhat connected. We might envision how these connect or build, but students often see these as a disconnected series of topics.
  • This workshop helps implement a successful approach that results in a more cohesive, meaningful course design. Participants will create a visual syllabus to help faculty and students envision with the course. The Visual Syllabus approach challenges faculty to define their course by its single big idea which serves as a framework for prioritizing what is most important to know and do. Take your course to the next level by expressing this big idea as an image. A benefit for the students is that they will more successfully connect and organize their knowledge.
  • Cheelan Bo-Linn is the Senior Specialist in Education in the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and Lecturer in the Department of Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership.
  • Bring a syllabus or course idea that you will be implementing in the Spring semester! This is a brown-bag, so bring your lunch. The FDIC will provide drinks and snacks. Register now (at eiu.gosignmeup.com)!
