Safety Manual Chapter 9
Accident Reporting - Issue Date 9/76
Nomenclature Change 5/5/2004
9-01 The Board of Trustees, which is the employer for all persons
employed by Eastern Illinois University, is subject to the Illinois OSHA and Workmen's
Compensation Laws. The purpose of occupational safety and health laws is best stated in
Section 2 of the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act: "To assure so far as
possible every working man and woman in the nation safe and healthful working conditions
and to preserve our human resources." The Eastern Illinois University Safety Program
is an effort to help achieve this purpose.
9-02 Illinois OSHA requires the employer to maintain a log of work
related accidents. An Accident Report form has been designed to capture the necessary
information. This form is also used to report work-related accidents and illnesses to the
Illinois Industrial Commission, which administers the Illinois Workmen's Compensation and
Occupational Diseases Acts and to the Department of Finance, which processes claims filed
under these Acts.
9-03 Unfortunately, work environments are not one-hundred percent
accident free. While every effort must be made to achieve an accident free state, at the
same time employees must be protected in the event of accidental injury or occupational
disease arising out of and in the course of employment. That is the purpose of the
Illinois Workmen's compensation and Occupational Diseases Acts. The Acts require the
employer to provide three types of benefits to an injured or disabled employee or to his
dependents:
- 9-031 All necessary medical, surgical, and hospital services
- 9-032 Temporary total disability payments
- 9-033 Cash payments for permanent injury or death
