Safety Manual Chapter 2

Environmental Health and Safety Department - Issue Date 4/75

2-01 - Accidents do not happen
They are caused by a hazardous condition, an unsafe act, or a natural disaster. All humans are susceptible--some more than others. The Safety Division was established for the purpose of control, reduction, and ultimately elimination of campus environmental hazards.

2-02 - The Eastern Illinois University Safety Manual has been prepared by the Safety Committee and approved by the President, in accordance with the National Fire prevention codes, Occupational Safety and Health Act, National Safety Council, State Law Statutes, and other recognized bodies in the field of public safety. Copies of these guides and standards are available through the Safety Section. Eastern Illinois University has adopted a stringent and effective fire safety program.

2-03 - The Safety Officer is responsible for carrying out the provisions of these standards and policies adopted by this University. He will assist in establishing fire exit drills, procedures for fire fighting, alarm and fire suppression equipment, and fire safety inspection. He will insure that all fire fighting equipment (portable extinguishers, sprinkler systems, hoses, standpipes, etc.) is checked in accordance with standards and maintained in proper operating conditions at all times. The University fire safety program is outlined in Part V of this manual.

2-04 - Environmental Health and Safety Committee has been formed to support, review, and recommend development of Environmental Health and Safety policies to the Vice President for Business Affairs. The Internal Governing Policy 156 CAMPUS SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES states:

"The University Safety Officer, through the Vice President for Business Affairs, shall develop recommendations as needed pertaining to these responsibilities for consideration by appropriate officials and bodies."
